East Texas is no stranger to flooding. Rule One: Do Not Try to Start a Flooded Vehicle

This is the most important thing to know. If your vehicle has taken on water — even a few inches into the engine compartment — attempting to start it can cause what mechanics call a hydrostatic lock. Water does not compress the way air does. If water enters the cylinders when the engine turns over, it can bend connecting rods, crack the engine block, or destroy the engine entirely.

A flooded engine that has not been started can often be saved. One that has been cranked after flooding frequently cannot.

If your vehicle was caught in high water: do not turn the key. Call a tow truck.

What Counts as a Flooded Vehicle?

You do not need to see water pouring out of the doors to have a flood-damaged vehicle. Signs that your car may have taken on damaging water include:

• Water line marks on the exterior (a tide line of dirt or debris)
• Wet carpet, floor mats, or upholstery inside the cabin
• Water in the trunk or cargo area
• Mud or silt in the engine compartment
• A musty or mildew smell inside the vehicle
• Electrical issues — warning lights, non-responsive windows, dead locks

If you see any of these after a flood event, treat the vehicle as flood-damaged until a mechanic says otherwise.

Immediate Steps After Your Vehicle Is Flooded

1. Get yourself to safety first. If water is rising around your vehicle, your life is more important than the car. Exit the vehicle and move to higher ground. Do not wait to see if the water recedes.

2. Do not start the vehicle. As noted above — this is the single most important thing you can do to preserve the engine.

4. Document everything for your insurance claim. Before the vehicle is moved if it is safe to do so, take photos of the water line, the interior, and any visible damage. This documentation will support your insurance claim.

5. Contact your insurance company. Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers flood damage. Collision coverage does not. Call your insurer as soon as possible to begin the claims process.
